TL III is designed principally to increase the productivity and production of groundnut, cowpea, common bean and chickpea – grain legume crops that provide substantial nutritional, cropping system and economic benefits to smallholder farmers. The project represents the third phase of a ten-year effort to increase legume production and resiliency in Sub-Saharan Africa and India, primarily through the development of improved cultivars and delivery of seed. The project is committed to work closely with the N2Africa and AfricaRising project to deliver production boosting agronomic practices, including mechanization approaches that incorporate the improved genetics delivered by this project. TL III builds directly upon the outputs and momentum of two previous phases, but is strategically focused on developing and delivering improved varieties of four target crops in seven focus geographies and improvement in the effectiveness of the breeding programs to more rapidly develop future varieties.
